Enjoy Him if You Can

Growing up, what was your dream? Was it to throw the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl? Or maybe to throw a no hitter, or score the buzzer beater in the NBA Finals. Growing up, I remember playing the sports because I loved them. Growing up I played soccer, basketball, and baseball. In high school, I played football for four years. While I was never a stand-out player on the teams I was on, I loved the game. I loved every sport, especially football and baseball. If you’re like me, that’s why you played the game: because you loved it.
In 2007, the median household income was $50,233. It will take CC Sabathia a half inning to make as much money as the average American family makes in one year. In today’s day and age, I feel like athletes have lost the reason for playing the game. Now, do not get me wrong, if I was offered $161 million dollars, I would take it and run. But, in a time of such economic crisis, should money of this caliber be given out? It is times like these that people flock to sports to give them the thrill that they need, and take their mind off of the state of the Country. While the signing of CC Sabathia, and now AJ Burnett has given Yankee fans everywhere something to be very happy about, the ticket prices that this signing, and new stadium will impose is nothing to cheer at. Tickets that cost just $250 in 1996, will now cost up to $1,000. The fact is, the Yankees are one of the most popular teams in baseball. Fans are going to want to go and watch their team play. With prices like these, the average working man, especially during an economic crisis, are not going to be able to afford ticket prices like these.
I have nothing against CC Sabathia or the New York Yankees. One can even argue that CC is “worth every penny” because of the joy he will bring to fans. But, how much joy can he truly bring when a bulk of his fans can not even afford a ticket to a game to see him pitch. Ironically, CC Sabathia is now the highest paid pitcher in baseball, and he is not even the best pitcher in New York; and, after this year, maybe not even the second best.
The Reds are going to call Pat Burrell’s agent.
Keith Law calls the Raul Ibanez signing ‘absurd’ for the Phillies.
The Mets acquired 27-year-old righty Connor Robertson from the Diamobdbacks for Scott Schoeneweis and cash considerations. The Mets will pay $1.6MM of the $3.6MM Schoeneweis is owed in 2009, according to ESPN.com.
Amalie Benjamin says the reported Red Sox offer to Kawakami is not accurate.
The Nationals signed Willie Harris to a two-year, $3MM contract. They also tendered contracts to Ryan Zimmerman, Josh Willingham, Scott Olsen and Shawn Hill.
